An old machine used to make copies. We usually referred to it as a ditto machine. Often the copies themselves were called mimeographs as well. The original was typed on a white sheet of paper that was also lined with a sheet of waxy, purple ink and then run through the machine. Very old machines had to be cranked by hand so a machine that ran on its own was the latest technology. Like with magic markers, we loved that fresh-off-the-press smell. It was the only nice thing about having an exam.
